What’s one of the worst things you can hear your vendor say? We’ll give you a hint: It basically means “not my problem,” and when you hear it, you’re back to square one. You never want to hear your technology integrator say, “That’s another vendor’s issue.”
This (or some variation of it) is a very common phrase in the technology industry—vendors all pointing fingers at each other while your IT team is stuck in the middle, just trying to get things back up and running. Those words often mean you’re going to spend hours trying to resolve the problem(s), and your other projects are going to be pushed to the back burner.
Why Do You Hear It?
The most common reason for Not My Problem Syndrome (NMPS) is that so many different technologies are integrated today. With the advent of cloud technology, various network architectures, and the ever-expanding Internet of Things (IoT), the lines between technologies are becoming incredibly blurred. Plus, most vendors are highly specialized. They will likely manage one or two of the technologies being used, but it’s unlikely they will handle every part of your network. So, when you’re having trouble, you might call your hardware vendor only to have them tell you that the problem is actually your Internet connection, and that you need to call your Internet provider to start troubleshooting.
This is a Big Problem Because . . .
. . . It makes life so much more difficult for you. Think about all your calls to your different vendors. Depending on their turnaround time and process, it could mean hours of downtime for vital technologies only to hear that they can’t help you. It’s a real challenge. There is also a possibility that the first vendor diagnosed the problem incorrectly. They’re typically not overly invested because it’s not their concern, which means more time contacting a third vendor, hoping they can help you. In the meantime, you’re still experiencing the issue(s).
